Breakbones was said to be the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms in his day. He was described as being massive and redoubtable. In 105 AC, he was brought to court by his father, Lord Lyonel Strong, alongside his younger brother Larys and his two sisters. Harwin was made a captain in the gold cloaks of King's Landing. During 112 AC, Harwin was one of many suitors to pay court to Rhaenyra Targaryen, the Princess of Dragonstone.
According to Mushroom in 113 AC, Harwin one night returning to the Red Keep from a night of reveling in the capital happened upon a spurned Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and she took solace in his company, being found abed together by Mushroom the following morning. In 114 AC, Princess Rhaenyra granted Harwin her favor at the tourney celebrating her wedding with Ser Laenor Velaryon. At that tourney, Ser Criston Cole broke his collarbone and shattered his elbow. Mushroom mocked him as "Brokenbones" after this event. Thereafter Harwin was a consistent presence at Rhaenyra's side and was the foremost member among the blacks.
In late 115 AC, according to Septon Eustace, during the birth of Rhaenyra's second son, Lucerys, both Rhaenyra's husband Ser Laenor and Breakbones were in attendance at her bedside. When Rhaenyra moved to Dragonstone after the rivalry with Queen Alicent Hightower and the greens grew to be too much, Breakbones went with her as her personal sworn shield. In 120 AC, after Prince Aemond Targaryen called Rhaenyra's sons "Strongs" and a brawl broke out, Harwin was removed as Princess Rhaenyra's champion by King Viserys I Targaryen and he returned to Harrenhal, being replaced by Ser Erryk Cargyll of the Kingsguard. Harwin died in a fire at Harrenhal that same year, with it also killing his father, Lord Lyonel Strong. The fire was said to be an accident and blamed on the curse of Harrenhal. Other non-mystical suspects included Prince Daemon Targaryen, whose motive would have been eliminating a rival for Princess Rhaenyra's affections; Lord Corlys Velaryon, as revenge for Harwin cuckolding his son; Harwin's brother, Larys, to claim the inheritance of Harrenhal; and King Viserys I, to eliminate the man who brought dishonor on his House.

Larys rarely spoke, preferring to listen. When he did so it was either to be glib or share words of great importance. The Clubfoot was an enigmatic and cunning man. Although he could be convincing and amiable when needed, he kept his own counsel and was largely friendless. One of Larys's feet was twisted at birth, so he dragged it with a limp.
Historians are still baffled as to exactly what Clubfroot's loyalties and goals were during the Dance of the Dragons. He does not seem to have been absolutely loyal to Aegon II, so much as he aligned with him against their mutual enemy Rhaenyra, who had shamed House Strong in her affair with his older brother. While most of those found guilty followed Perkin in taking the black, Lord Larys and Ser Gyles of the Kingsguard chose death over the Wall. Cregan beheaded the pair with his Valyrian steel greatsword, Ice. Cregan granted Larys' last request, that his clubfoot be removed from his corpse so Larys would at least be free of it in death.

Lyonel was a large, burly man, with balding hair. He was a formidable man. Lyonel was a man of great natural gifts. As he was slow of speech and a taciturn man, he was often mistaken for an unintelligent brute. However, having studied at the Citadel, he was extremely literate and well learned. As a result of his time at the Citadel, Lyonel had an exhaustive knowledge of the laws of the Seven Kingdoms. Lyonel was a renowned warrior, with a reputation as a formidable battler.
In 120 AC, over mounting rumors of his grandsons' parentage, Viserys removed Ser Harwin as Princess Rhaenyra's sworn shield. Lyonel left the court to accompany Harwin on his return to Harrenhal. Shortly after their arrival, a fire broke out in the tower they were sleeping in, and killed both Lyonel and Harwin, along with three retainers and a dozen servants. The fire was considered an accident, and blamed on the curse of Harrenhal. However, some records of the time suggested it was a murder, and listed various suspects.
